What Your Zodiac Sign Says About Your Core Values

What Your Zodiac Sign Says About Your Core Values

In life, there are bound to be certain things that hold a heavier weight where you might value their influence and prioritize them over others. Your core values make you who you are: they determine what steps you take in life, what your goals are, who you wish to surround yourself with, how you want others to perceive you, and even what sexual traits you have.

It makes sense that these values would relate back to your personality, and it just so happens you can also look into the zodiac for some clues. The zodiac has great predictors of certain characteristics and behavioral patterns you'll have based on your sign, and while it's still a generalization and not set in stone, it's worth looking into. You never know - the stars might be on to something. Here are the core values you cherish based on your sign.

Aries: Self-Assertion

Aries have abandonment issues and therefore are forced to discover and defend a self-construct independent of anyone else. It's this awareness of their oneness that drives them to assert themselves in the world, for no one is going to do it for them. Thus, 'looking out for number one' becomes their maxim, which gives them the reputation of being self-absorbed in a fiery way. Remember, Aries, it's easy to be alone (but not as fun).

Taurus: Stability

As a grounded earth sign, Taurus only believes in that which can be perceived by their senses. They need to feel rooted and secure so they can enjoy their sensual nature to the hilt - otherwise they'll be worrisome and disconnected from their bodies. Plus, you'll like nice things to hold onto. Known for being materialistic, Taurus loves their possessions, as material objects serve as tactile proof of their stability that allows them to let go.

Gemini: Communication

You better keep up a good conversation with Gemini and avoid holding back. Gemini is known to be a chatterbox, because it's the exchanging of ideas and learning from their encounters that fuels them. They value communication, because otherwise the information gathered and passed on is jeopardized. It's this obsession with communication that makes them excellent teachers, writers, and speakers.

Cancer: Emotional Security

A lot of Cancers do not identify with their keywords like 'nurturer,' 'mother,' 'home,' and 'family.' Really, those words are just typical ways in which we achieve emotional security, which is what Cancer needs. Sensitive Cancer needs to feel at-home within the self - safe, secure, and cocooned - however she personally might achieve that state.

Leo: Self-Expression

Leos have an irrepressible urge to express the fullest extent of their being. Being ruled by the center of our solar system (the sun), Leo likes to take center stage for appreciation and applause. However, they lead with their heart. "The body part they rule is the heart, and to keep it feeling good, only authentic self-expression will due. They know they must feel good in order to make their audience feel good.

Virgo: Service

Born at a time in which their parents weren't getting along, Virgos grow up blaming themselves for their familial problems. Holding onto this belief results in them overcompensating in life, thinking that if they are just perfect enough, everything will be okay. This translates into a need to serve, and as a result, they are the selfless servants of the zodiac, outworking everyone else to achieve harmony within.

Libra: Balance

Partnership is balance to a Libra; in relationships, they balance their partner's needs with their own. If not in a partnership, Libra will still seek balance through tit-for-tat arguments, justice in wrongdoing, and beauty, since beauty is said to be determined by facial symmetry. Be careful, though; you don't want to put too much emphasis on setting score or materialism.

Aquarius: Freedom

Linked to Aquarius, Ganymede in Greek mythology was abducted by Zeus to Mount Olympus to be his lover. Ever since, Aquarians have been hell-bent on maintaining their freedom - and everyone has been hell-bent on taking it from them, if only to preserve the status quo. Represented by the free, open sky, Aquarius needs to be free to innovate and serve humanity.

Scorpio: Pleasure

Scorpios are much more in touch with their primal impulses than other signs. Nothing is more primal than life and death, which are metaphorically expressed through sex. However, Scorpio also values simple, innocent pleasures, which allow them to exchange emotional resources, like love and care, with others.

Sagittarius: Expansion

You like your adventures, Sag, and nothing's holding you back. Half-man, half-horse, Sagittarians aspire to guide and teach others and also run unbridled and free. As adventurers and philosophers, they want to roam and explore not only the world, but their minds. They are changeable and philosophical, as what makes life meaningful to them is the search for truth, not the finding of it.

Capricorn: Status

Coming from 'the school of hard knocks, Capricorns grow up with too much responsibility, which keeps them from receiving the emotional nurturing needed to feel secure. As a result, they cautiously take steps up the mountain, toward their ambitions and away from their foundation. Once their sure-footed trek leads them to the top, they have the power to be their own authority, which makes them feel secure.

Why you must eat eggplant

Why you must eat eggplant
Why eggplants are good for you

Reduced risk of cancer

When used properly, eggplant can provide many health benefits, including being important in the treatment and prevention of cancer. Eggplant has been found to be especially useful in the treatment of colon cancer due to the high amount of fiber found within eggplant.

Fiber is important in the treatment of colon cancer because it is a relatively porous nutrient, and because of this, as it moves through the digestive tract, it has the tendency to absorb toxins and chemicals that can lead to the development of colon cancer.

For best results, individuals who are interested in reducing their risk for the development of color cancer should be sure to include the skin of the eggplant during consumption. Research has found that the skin of eggplant may contain more fiber that the actual eggplant itself.

Eggplants help weight loss

As stated above, eggplant contains high amounts of fiber, making it a great food in the fight against cancer. But, the fiber found in eggplant has other uses-namely, its ability to be a useful tool for people who are trying to lose weight.

Fiber is a relatively "bulky" food, meaning that is takes up a lot of room in the stomach. Therefore, by eating eggplant in a salad or appetizer before a meal, dieters are likely to have a greater feeling of satiety, and generally eat fewer calories (thereby achieving a substantial weight loss with time).

In addition, fiber is slow digesting, and takes a long time to move from the stomach to the digestive tract. Because of this, the eggplant keeps dieters feeling full for a longer period of time-and therefore, they won't be as tempted to snack between meals, which will again aid in weight loss.

Eggplants for better skin tone

Finally, eggplant contains a high amount of water-and similarly, aside from fat and bone, our bodies are composed of almost primarily water. Water has important roles in a variety of pathways through the body, but has been found to be especially important in the maintenance of healthy skin and hair.

Individuals who are dehydrated are more likely to exhibit hair that is thin, dry and has split ends, along with skin that appears to be flaky, dry, with a greater number of lines and wrinkles.

Consuming adequate amount of water through either water itself or through food items such as eggplant can not only improve the quality of your hair and skin, but also the general performance of your body. For best results, eat the eggplant raw-research has found that cooking it removes some of the water that is so beneficial.

How to eat eggplants: Eggplant is a very versatile vegetable. It can be baked or roasted for an entree or mixed into a dip or side dish.

5 surprising facts about cholesterol
As result of this, we always consider it to be bad and harmful to heart health in particular. Yes, it is true, that high cholesterol isn't good for your heart. But, there are some other important facts about cholesterol that are just as important. Let's take a look...

Some symptoms of high cholesterol are visible to the naked eye

Generally, you come to know about high cholesterol through your doctor. But many a times reddish bumps show up on the body. They are known as xanthomas, and are caused by high cholesterol.

Exercise can increase good cholesterol

Daily exercise is very beneficial for healthy living; more so if you want to control cholesterol. Regular exercise can help lower bad cholesterol and increase the density of good cholesterol naturally.

Cholesterol rises after menopause

Before menopause, estrogen helps to keep cholesterol levels in check. But after a woman's last menstrual cycle, the level of estrogen falls, making the bad cholesterol rise sharply. As the level of cholesterol rises, it also increases the risk of heart problems in many women.

Low cholesterol can be bad as well

Though we all know that high cholesterol is bad for health, on the other hand, very low cholesterol is also associated with health problems. It is important to have a steady level of cholesterol, because if the cholesterol level drops below 160 mg/dL it may increase the chances of certain types of cancer, depression and early delivery.

Kids can have cholesterol as well

Due to obesity or family history of heart disease, kids as young as two can have high cholesterol. Hence, it is important to have a medical checkup done as early as possible and keep your diet in check.

Smoking tied to early onset of pancreatic cancer

Smoking tied to early onset of pancreatic cancer

Those who smoke and drink heavily may are likelier to develop pancreatic cancer at an earlier age than those who don't.

Researchers from the University of Michigan Health System found that heavy smokers with pancreatic cancer were diagnosed around age 62 and heavy drinkers at age 61 – almost a decade earlier than the average age of 72.

Smoking is a strong risk factor for pancreatic cancer and alcohol has been shown to cause oxidative damage to the pancreas, which sets the stage for the inflammatory pathways that can lead to cancer.

The findings only indicate these habits can lead to developing pancreatic cancer earlier in life.
The study of 811 pancreatic cancer patients from the multicenter, international database Pancreatic Cancer Collaborative Registry does not prove the habits caused cancer.

The study does make a step toward understanding at what age screening for pancreatic cancer should begin – once widespread screening is available.

"As screening programs are developed, an understanding of how personal features influence the age of presentation will be important to optimize the timing of those screenings.

Cancer research discovers unexpected new way to produce nylon

Cancer research discovers unexpected new way to produce nylon
Researchers in their quest for a cancer cure have instead discovered a molecule which could facilitate cheaper and greener ways to produce nylon.

Researchers from the Duke Cancer Institute made the discovery from an intriguing notion that some of the genetic and chemical changes in cancer tumours might be harnessed for beneficial uses.
Nylon is a ubiquitous material, used in carpeting, upholstery, auto parts, apparel and other products.

A key component for its production is adipic acid, which is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world.

Currently, adipic acid is produced from fossil fuel, and the pollution released from the refinement process is a leading contributor to global warming.

The researchers delved into the adipic acid problem based on similarities between cancer research techniques and biochemical engineering.

Both fields rely on enzymes, which are molecules that convert one small chemical to another. Enzymes play a major role in both healthy tissues and in tumours, but they are also used to convert organic matter into synthetic materials such as adipic acid.

One of the most promising approaches being studied today for environmentally friendly adipic acid production uses a series of enzymes as an assembly line to convert cheap sugars into adipic acid.

However, one critical enzyme in the series, called a 2-hydroxyadipate dehydrogenase, has never been produced, leaving a missing link in the assembly line.

This is where the cancer research comes in. In 2008 and 2009, Duke researchers, including Hai Yan identified a genetic mutation in glioblastomas and other brain tumours that alters the function of an enzyme known as an isocitrate dehydrogenase.

The researchers found that the genetic mutation seen in cancer triggers a similar functional change to a closely related enzyme found in yeast and bacteria (homoisocitrate dehydrogenase), which creates the elusive 2-hydroxyadipate dehydrogenase necessary for "green" adipic acid production.

"It's exciting that sequencing cancer genomes can help us to discover new enzyme activities. Even genetic changes that occur in only a few patients could reveal useful new enzyme functions that were not obvious before.

Cancer awareness programme for medical students in JODHPUR
JODHPUR: With an aim to tackle the estimated spurt of 500% in cancer cases in the Country in the next two decades, the Union government has signed an MoU with the Indian Cooperative Oncology Network (ICON), a national body of cancer specialists specializing in cancer training, teaching, education and cooperative cancer clinical trials in India. The objective of the MoU is to conduct cancer awareness and education (CME) in all the 315 odd medical colleges of the country for undergraduate and post-graduate medical students.
Hemant Malhotra, head of medical oncology (SMS Medical College) and the programme director of CME, known as PromOTE (Promoting of Oncology Training and Education), said recognising the gravity of the situation and the relative lack of knowledge and interest in the medical students - both UGs and PGs -regarding cancer, this programme is expected to make them better acquainted with oncology, to ensure early diagnosis and better treatment of cancer patients.
Malhotra said according to WHO's observation, more than two-thirds of all the cancer deaths annually will be recorded in developing countries. "Indian cancer registry data suggest that one in every 10 Indians will develop cancer in his/her lifetime. The diagnosis, work-up and the management of the cancer patient has undergone a dramatic change in the past 20 years and today more than 50% of all cancer cases can be cured," Malhotra added.
The first CME of the state was held in Jodhpur at the S N Medical College on Sunday and the next CME will take place in the SMS Medical College in Jaipur.
Jodhpur's SN Medical College also became the state's first medical college to have connected with the high speed National Knowledge Network with the help of National Informatics Centre (NIC), which provided technical support to the college. This landmark initiative paved way for the state's first Tele-CME through video conferencing recently, establishing contact of the SN Medical College with Hospital for Sick Children ( Toronto).
Principal of the S N Medical College, Arvind Mathur, said doctors of both hospitals discussed the emerging concept of universal global physician by emphasizing knowledge of culture and traditions of other countries for a physician and international collaborations in medical education in Indian perspective followed by a CME on pediatric neurology, under which two
