When you're applying to university, picking a course can feel like a minefield of options that all sound slightly similar, but also have completely different prospectuses and course requirements.

And then you have to take into consideration how competitive the course is, how likely you are to get a place, and whether the syllabus is exactly what you want to study. Pretty stressful, right?
Interestingly, The Knowledge Academy have taken a look at figures from the Higher Education Student Statistics: UK, 2016/17, to pull out the least popular undergraduate courses in the UK.
The least popular undergraduate courses:
·      Veterinary science – 5,460 students in 2017
·      Agriculture & related subjects – 9,240 students in 2017
·      Architecture, building & planning – 32,095 students in 2017
·      Mathematical sciences – 36,590 students in 2017
·      Mass communications & documentation – 39,490 students in 2017


They found that Veterinary Science is the least popular course for both male and female students, with only 1,110 male students partaking on the course in 2017 and 4,345 females, while Agriculture and Related Subjects only had 2,770 male students and 6,470 female students.
As for the most popular undergraduate courses.  Probably somewhat less surprising:
·      Business & administrative studies – 232,805 students in 2017
·      Biological sciences – 178,700 students in 2017
·      Subjects allied to medicine – 169,835 students in 2017
·      Social studies – 160,910 students in 2017
·      Creative arts & design – 154,610 students in 2017


The most popular subject among male students is Business studies, with 119,515 enrolled in 2017, while the most popular among females is subjects allied to medicine, with 136,215 students enrolled in 2017.

The first large-scale chemical weapon attack was carried out with chlorine and mustard gas (yperite) on April 22, 1915, at Ypres in Belgium

This happened during the First World War when the Germans attacked French, Canadian and Algerian troops. It killed 90,000 people and over one million casualties were seen during the war.

The use of chemicals in weapon tools was prevalent for thousands of years now. Poisoned arrows, boiling tar, arsenic smoke, and noxious fumes were commonly known agents of chemical weapons.

How were chemical weapons used?

The mode of formation of chemical weapons started on the battlefields of World War I.

In this war, the battlefields were immersed with gases like chlorine and phosgene. They were released from canisters and dispersed by the wind on the battlefield.
These chemicals were manufactured in huge quantity by the turn of the century. After being manufactured, they were deployed to the battlefields of trench warfare that lasted for an unusually long time in World War I.

A trench warfare is a type of combat in which opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other. The most famous use of trench warfare is the Western Front in World War I.

Around 124,000 tonnes of chemical agents were used by the end of World War I.

World War I and II munitions prepared for destruction lie in a cage at the Society for the Disposal of Chemical Weapons and Ordinance (GEKA), is the only German company which is able to destroy chemical munitions countrywide:
Chemical weapons were deployed on a large scale in almost all theatres in the First and Second World Wars.

The United States and the Soviet Union maintained tens of thousands of stockpiles of chemical weapons during the Cold War. This amount of chemical weapons was enough to destroy most of the human and animal life on Earth.

 

How can chemical warfare cripple lives?


Those injured in chemical warfare suffers from the effects for the rest of their lives this is what makes the events like at Ieper during World War I, a generation scarring.

Blistering skin, eye damage, and excruciating deaths were other reasons that the nations decided to ban chemical weapons after World War I.

 

Major instances where chemical weapons were used


Examples of the use of chemical weapons were the sarin poisoning incident in Matsumoto, a Japanese residential community, in 1994, and the sarin attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995 -- both perpetrated by the Aum Shinrikyu doomsday cult.
Iraq used chemical weapons in Iran during the war in the 1980s.
At least 5,000 people were gassed to death in 1988 when the Iraqi air force dropped chemical bombs on Halabja in the country's Kurdish north - a defining moment in a long history of oppression:

East Ghouta, Saraqeb, Douma in Syria are the most recent victims of chemical weapons in 2018. Chlorine gas was used to attack the civilians in these areas.

Combatting chemical weapons

The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is implemented by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which is headquartered in The Hague with about 500 employees.

CWC is a multilateral treaty that bans chemical weapons and requires their destruction within a specified period of time.

The duration of this treaty is unlimited and more comprehensive than the 1925 Geneva Protocol. Geneva protocol of 1925 outlaws the use but not the possession of chemical weapons.

Regular Use of Paracetamol increases Asthma
Some asthmatics choose paracetamol because they have a sensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Nurofen. People who regularly use paracetamol are nearly three times more likely to have asthma.

The study, which has been published in the European Respiratory Journal, found that the risk of suffering asthma symptoms are nearly three times more likely for those using paracetamol at least once a week.
However, other painkillers did not have the same effect, according to the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network, which carried out the research.

During the study, researchers questioned over 500 adults with asthma and over 500 people without asthma about the use of painkillers. The researchers conclude that there is a positive association between the frequent use of paracetamol and adult asthma. These findings support those of other studies in the UK and the US.

The link between asthma and paracetamol may be due to the action of the drug as it reduces levels of 'glutathione' in the lungs and this is needed to defend the delicate airways against damage from pollution and smoke.

Since 2000, several publications have reported this association for instance in the UK and the USA. Asthma prevalence is higher in children and adults in countries with higher paracetamol sales.

The researchers believe regular use of paracetamol decreases levels of the antioxidant glutathione, found in the airways and the nose, which protects the lungs from air pollution and tobacco smoke and the harmful effects of free radicals.

"Considering asthma is a common disease and paracetamol use is frequent, it is now important to find out whether this association is really a causal one," Dr Shaheen said.
