Mumbai: When she launched the first trailer of her new film ‘Aiyyaa’, Rani Mukerji came dressed as a traditional Marathi mulgi, and on Thursday, Rani donned a South Indian avatar to launch the film’s first song- an item number featuring her and the film’s hero, south actor Prithviraj.

Dressed in pink, Rani launched the song and the film’s music in the buzzing South Indian locality of Matunga in Mumbai. The event also introduced Prithviraj.

"It was a celebration of South Indian culture and the best way to let people know about our hero, Prithviraj," said director Sachin Kundalkar to a daily.

The song was launched amidst fanfare keeping the Southern culture in mind. The cast and crew came dressed in south Indian attire to match the theme of the event.

In the film, Rani plays a Maharashtrian girl Meenakshi, who harbours a crush on a South Indian man played by Prithviraj.

Kundalkar said, "It is a carnal desire of a Maharashtrian woman for these men that is expressed in the song. It is conveying a South Indian man`s physicality but very gracefully. It is not about the emotions but more about the body of a man."

"I am very fond of South Indians and to show Rani`s character longing for her hero came very naturally to me. Amit Trivedi has strung together Amitabh Bhattacharya`s lyrics through his mesmerising tunes. This film was the best vehicle for South superstar Prithviraj to make his Hindi film debut," added Kundalkar.

The song is somewhat a parody of southern films and has Rani gyrating with Prithviraj to some hilarious lyrics.

The film is scheduled for an October 12 release.

Rani Mukerji performed three item songs in her forthcoming film ‘Aiyyaa'
Mumbai: Item numbers have become a rage in Bollywood nowadays. And if one was not enough, Rani Mukerji has performed on three item numbers in her forthcoming film. Known more for her husky voice than shaking her legs, the actress is keen on creating a new image. All the three songs are distinct and planned enough to go with the flow of the story.

One song, which is to be officially launched today, is a fantasy and over-the-top dance number. It’s a dream sequence between her and her south Indian fantasy man. The second one is a Lavani number and the third is a belly dance number for which the actress is said to have toiled the most.

Debutant director Sachin Kundalkar feels that Rani has done an excellent job. “Rani has done all the three item songs in her dream in the film. They fit perfectly well into the picture. Amit Trivedi has composed five songs and three of them are item songs,” he states.
