Tritiya comes every month, but the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha, Vaisakh month (April/may) creates this auspicious day.

The day encourages people to donate and indulge in charity with a belief that Akshaya Tritiya will make their good deeds imperishable.

'Akshaya', the word itself means 'which has no barrier, hindrance or ending' while 'Tritiya' refers to the 3rd day after the new moon.
