Akshaya Tritiya is usually
seen on the "Third tithi" of Shukla Paksha of the Vaisakh month.
Vaishakh month of 2018 begins on April 21 and ends on May 21, whereas, April 18
holds the Tritiya tithi in Shukla Paksha.
Tritiya comes every month,
but the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha, Vaisakh month (April/may) creates this
auspicious day.
The day encourages people to
donate and indulge in charity with a belief that Akshaya Tritiya will make
their good deeds imperishable.
'Akshaya', the word itself
means 'which has no barrier, hindrance or ending' while 'Tritiya' refers to the
3rd day after the new moon.
Several historical events
that are believed to have occurred on this day were:
- The descent of the Ganges on Earth
- Sacred grain of Barley first appeared on Earth on this day
- Lord Parasuram incarnated on Earth on Akshaya Tritiya
- Sage Ved Vyas started composing Mahabharata on this day
All these auspicious
happenings give this day more recognition and importance among people.
Many prefer to purchase gold
on Akshaya Tritiya in order to make it their perpetual nature as the day gives
the belief of "eternal stay".
